Member Spotlight: Dean Dombrowski

If you look in the dictionary under the word "survival," you will find a picture of Edmund "Dean" Dombrowski. Dean has been a member of the West Communities YMCA since 2001. Each day, be it cold, hot, raining or snowing, Dean comes to the Y and prepares himself a cup of coffee right before his workout or swim.

Within the past few years, Dean has been diagnosed with cancer (now in remission), has had a ruptured appendix, and a herniated stomach, all which led to a number of surgeries, including his shoulder.

After each battle, he returns to the Y, prepares his coffee and starts his day. After awhile, his doctor restricted him from certain physical activities. But that did not stop him from coming to the Y. After healing from surgery, you'd find him in the pool paying tribute to the water or in the fitness center walking the treadmill.

Dean has been an inspiration to many of us at West Communities. No cough, sneeze, ache or pain compares to his bravery. He keeps us from complaining about our minor afflictions. Often ask, "how are you today?" Dean replies, "I don't know how much more I can take." Yet he bears it and continues his daily activities. Nicknamed "pin cushion," Dean's endurance is a true meaning of survival.
